Johanna studied first at University College North Wales, Bangor, completing a BA Hons in English Language and Literature. She then spent three years in Glasgow researching for a PhD, before deciding to go into education. She then spent 15 years working as a primary school teacher in Spain.

Having always had a keen interest in drama, she decided upon her return to England to ensure that her son inherited her love of the theatre and began taking him to every performance that was suitable for his age.
One of Johanna's particular interests is the way drama can help children who may have emotional and behavioural difficulties and how being involved in drama can help children explore issues that arise in their lives and better identify and deal with situations and people. She and her son are both keen theatre goers and consider themselves particularly fortunate to be living in Liverpool, which has such a dynamic theatre scene. This personal connection to drama has become a fundamental part of life for both of them, and after each performance, they talk through and review the production together.
