For Now, I Am... reviewed by Rachel Elderkin on Saturday, August 22, 2015 for Downstage CentreCaptivating and strikingly honest: Marc Brew in 'For Now, I Am...' at the Zoo Southside (Photos: Susan Hay)

A sheet of white silk cloth, hiding the form of a human body, fills the stage.

As lights move across the cloth’s surface, grid lines turn to soothing ripples and Marc Brew’s bare head, shoulders and torso are slowly revealed. It’s a nod towards the clinical environment Brew woke up in following the car accident that left him paralysed and which nearly took his life, but also towards his journey of recovery and reconciliation. The simple act of walking his fingers up his spine is an uncomfortably strong image

For Now, I Am… approaches its subject with simplicity and sincerity. Brew’s movements of his arms, hands and torso express heartfelt emotion; a mix of pain and rediscovery of one’s own body. Each gesture is not just a dance but an insight into his life, into the struggles both emotional and physical he has faced. The simple act of walking his fingers up his spine is an uncomfortably strong image, one which echoes with the story this work portrays.

Marc Brew Company For Now I Am Edinburgh Fringe 2015Brew never shies away from evoking a sense of the difficulties he has faced in coming to terms with his transformed body. The rawness of seeing such personal, and so often private, emotions exhibited onstage makes For Now, I Am… a powerful and touching work. The closing image of Brew suspended by his feet above the stage, his body poised in an upside down crucifix, is both bold and fittingly poignant. It is, of course, an image loaded with meaning, but the vying themes of personal sacrifice and new life neatly capture the mixed emotions of pain and positivity that run through this captivating and strikingly honest work.

For Now, I Am... at the Zoo Southside, Edinburgh until August 30th.
