Sweeney Rises... written by Ross Lowe for Downstage Centre, published on Tuesday, May 26, 2015The final cut... Mitch Gamble as the titular character in 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street'

The Demon Barber rises in Derby this week as Streetlight Theatre Arts bring their eagerly-anticipated production of 'Sweeney Todd' to the stage.

Already selling well, this production marks the next stage in the remarkable rise of this young local theatre company. Director Matt Powell, speaking to Downstage Centre prior to the final rehearsals, revealed how pleased he is with ticket sales so far.

"There's a lot of interest in the show and it's selling well," he told us. "It's an incredibly varied show - one minute you'll find yourself laughing, the next you're crying or gasping in shock  - it really is a diverse show which covers all kinds of genres."

For Matt, directing this show is something of a dream come true. This cast and production team have made the show an absolute dream to work on."Sweeney Todd is a masterpiece and it's my favourite musical of all time," he confesses. "I've wanted to do it for years - and this cast and production team have made it an absolute dream to work on."

The cast are an all-star ensemble of some of the brightest lights in local amateur theatre, including Adam Guest who played the title role with Long Eaton Operatic Society a number of years ago before directing Mitch Gamble (who takes on the role in this production) in Jesus Christ Superstar there too.

Sweeney Todd Streetlight Theatre Arts"Adam has helped to take this production up to the next level as has everyone onstage - and he's come full circle now to play Sweeney's arch nemesis. I think he's relishing the chance to play the bad guy!"

We'll leave it up to you to decide who the heroes and bad guys are in this story, but one thing's for sure - you're guaranteed a thrilling and chilling night of theatrical entertainment this week at the Robert Ludlam Theatre.

Don't miss out!
